Bike Camp 101

Changing a Flat
- Don’t rush the procedure, rushing may cause a pinch flat
- Install the tire so that the label matches with the stem
- Pump air into the tube to find the hole and then find the object in the tire
- Sweep the inside and outside of the tire carefully with your hand
- Be careful so you do not cut your hand with any objects inside or outside the tire
- Those objects can continue to cause a flat
- Make sure there are no objects poking through the tire.
- If you have a whole in the tire use a wrapper or dollar bill to cover the whole.
Mounting and dismounting:
- Always practice mounting and dismounting
- If a cleat gets stuck you will be able to dismount the bike without falling
Track Stands:
- Place cranks in a horizontal position
- Keep your dominant foot forward
- Handlebars are held at a 45 degree angle
- Allows the bike's forward and back motion into side-to-side motion beneath the rider's body
- Allows you to maintain your center of gravity underneath you and the bike
- Practice whenever you have to wait for somebody or stopped at a light
- Try to stand for a few seconds at a time and gradually increase until you can do it indefinitely.
Braking:
- Use only Front brake to slow down or to stop
- Back and Front brakes are for panic stops

- Always look ahead several riders (pot holes, objects in path)
Drills
- Ride with one arm on shoulder (practice riding close)
- Lean on each other (simulates ridding close)
- Wheel tapping (what it feels like and how to take control)
Counter Steering
- Push on the right handlebar to go right, Push on the left handlebar to go left
- Shift hips on opposite side of pushing of handlebars
- Keep pedal on turning side up at 12 o clock
- Keep opposite pedal down at 6 o clock
- This will help if your wheels slip. Your pedal will pop you back up
